Человек, написавший статьи, собранные в этой книге, несомненно принадлежит к великому и неистребимому племени ученых-романтиков.
Ох уж эти романтики! Они всегда угадывают неожиданное там, где ничего такого «не может быть, потому что этого не может быть никогда». Их логика алогична. Их «знаю» походит больше на «верую». Их интуиция предвосхищает и, вот поди ж ты, случается, даже опровергает, казалось бы, безупречно построенные доводы рассудка. Их теории, концепции, взгляды всегда дерзки, даже парадоксальны, а значит, и «неудобны»! И, будьте покойны, за все это ученые-романтики всегда получают сполна: их критикуют, опровергают, шельмуют, высмеивают, ими возмущаются и пренебрегают, им даже отказывают в праве говорить от имени науки, называют дилетантами, невеждами, фальсификаторами, а то еще и похуже. Выдержать это по силам только настоящему ученому и подлинному романтику.
Тур Хейердал выдержал.
Вот уже 30 лет – с того самого времени, как он, в сущности еще юноша, оказался на Маркизских островах* – Хейердал наперекор всем авторитетам доказывает, что заселение островов Тихого океана шло не только из Азии, но и со стороны Америки. «Американские индейцы в Тихом океане"** – так прямо и назвал Хейердал свое главное исследование, с величайшими трудностями, и то лишь после блистательного рейса на «Кон-Тики», опубликованное им в 1952 году, – исследование, тут же преданное анафеме и осмеянию***. В дружном хоре разгневанных оппонентов лишь изредка раздавались трезвые, уважительные голоса****. Да и как могло быть иначе? Ведь в этой своей книге Тур Хейердал осмелился поднять руку на давно уже утвердившуюся в науке и потому ставшую традиционной, «удобной» и привычной теорию заселения Полинезии исключительно из Юго-Восточной Азии;
