Настоящую книгу можно рассматривать как вклад в общую традицию интереса к метафоре, но она добавляет новые сложности, описывая на языке метафоры связи, существующие между взаимодействиями в семье. Системная метафора и метафора сна — явления разного порядка. Фокусироваться на метафоре, находящей свое выражение в определенной последовательности взаимодействий, совсем не то же самое, что питать интерес к метафоре сообщения или действия. Мы переходим на принципиально иной уровень анализа, когда расширяем представление о метафорической коммуникации, находя формы ее выражения в области не только индивидуальных сообщений, но и внутрисемейных отношений или систем взаимодействия.Стратегическая семейная терапия разделяет с индивидуальной психодинамической и экспериентальной терапией общий интерес, фокус которого составляет понимание метафоры. В свою очередь, с семейными терапевтами она делит предмет их заботы — организацию семьи. Два этих интереса и соединились вместе в стратегической семейной терапии, определяя ее направленность на изменение и метафор внутрисемейного взаимодействия, и манипулирования властью в семье.
